Oftentimes loose fill surfacing, like wood or rubber mulch are considerably cheaper than artificial turf or poured in place rubber surfacing. However, without a containment system, the mulch won’t work. In most cases, playgrounds need at least 6-inches of rubber mulch and 12-inches of wood mulch to begin with. The wood mulch will compact down to the necessary 9-inches very quickly.
